Zanele Muholi, herself a lesbian and gender activist, explores the changes on existing and growing sexualities and identities in South Africa. Although South Africa has one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, which legalizes gay marriages, living your identity on an every-day basis can for lesbians and transsexuals be quite another thing. The facts of the constitution still does not mean that individuals are always safeguarded, protected, tolerated or supported. Referring to her photography, Muholi herself makes clear that she uses her photos as a weapon to explore, as an insider, different sexual and gender identities, breaking stereotypes of the representation of, for example, the black female and male body. This exploration also enforced her conclusion that the ideas of private and collective interchange with those public and political.
