Witness of the Century
In Witness of the century a cage with a live parrot is placed next to a small table with a mini cassette player on it. The casette player plays a pre-recorded short sound loop consisting of three words (Guantánamo, Guantamera, Guantanamero), read not by a human but by a computer, one of those computer-generated voices that are not immediately recognizable as being produced by a machine. The U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, characterised by Amnesty International as "a human rights scandal", is both a real and symbolic example of the ongoing and world-wide state of exception.
