| Sophia Tsamouti Sophia Tsamouti’s work consists of geometrical forms and large coloured surfaces, derived from Abstract painting, in combination with the atmosphere of Pop Art. However, what marks this particular style of painting is the presence of irony and deliberate contrasts. Thus, while viewers would expect the intense acrylic colours used to be related to “happy” themes and stories, the artist takes us by surprise by choosing to narrate dark and unpleasant themes. As she herself notes, “topics revolve around emotions experienced by people as a result of the modern way of living. I use bright and luminous colours trying to glorify a sad situation”. The symbols of power are ready to be overthrown, shattered, perhaps by the artist herself; meanwhile we come to see that anything we expect to happen, is going to happen on a second level, within a frame, within a painting. Thus the protagonist very lively appears to be ready to overthrow any form of tyranny of power as well as representation in painting. Theodore Markoglou Download CV | Destroy![]() |
