| Aspasia Krystalla “If I had to characterise the current state of affairs, I would say that it is ‘after the orgy’. The orgy, in a way, was the explosive movement of modernity, of liberation in every domain. Political liberation, sexual liberation, liberation of productive forces, women’s liberation, children’s liberation, liberation of unconscious drives, liberation of art. The assumption of all models of representation, all models of anti-representation. It was a total orgy of reality, rationality, sexuality, critique and anti-critique, growth and crisis of growth. We have explored all the paths of production and potential overproduction of objects, signs, messages, ideologies, pleasures. Today everything has been liberated, the dice has been rolled, and we are faced with the crucial question: WHAT DO WE DO AFTER THE ORGY?” Jean Baudrillard. Aspasia Krystalla’s work is based on a photograph taken by Hiroshi Sugimoto titled “Hyena-Jackal-Vulture”. In an almost narrative way, the artist attempts to render a miniature of society and the culture in which, as vultures, we consume the death, emotions and rights of others. She herself being the primary observer, she points out through the dual relationship of observer-artist that the viewing of an illustrated/drawn image is not a matter of simple reading-viewing, but a direct recording of a gesture that on its own forms part of reality. Of course, her work poses another question. Which reality? That of Hiroshi Sugimoto or hers? The reality of an overconsuming society? A viewer society?
