Maria Glyka

I create objects and installations out of cardboard and
paper.
The transient and fragile nature of the materials I use constantly,
keeps my work oscillating between painting and
construction.
I explore the visual sound of earlier constructions and earlier
finished “objects”. I paint on their surfaces. I fold and
unfold them, placing emphasis on the creation of associations
through this process. I explore the relationships that
are born from the uncertainties and diversifications that
these folds bear between the limits, without however setting
them.
I bring together external and internal spaces, playing with
the boundaries of reality, a reality that is read in this way
again and again, but can never really be seen in its totality.
I use hidden elements, secret openings and emerging signs
to discover new narratives of non-linear stories.
I then photograph or film them, show them and reveal them
anew.
I thus create series of parallel actions, direct and indirect
associations, without predetermined outcomes, in order
to determine what does and does not exist, and what is
happening in the space between things. Their edges are
never clearly defined, their folds do not constitute a metric
change, but they themselves become events.
I often think of my work as hypothetical situations; as situations
that contain as much that which is accepted as reality,
as that which seems possible… as spaces that are defined
as being stable, unchanging, yet constantly conquered and
marked.
